TEACHERS DAY

September 5, Teachers Day

The Birth date of Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan(05.09.1888) second president of India is celebrated as Teachers Day in India.

Iam remembering my school days. I studied in Govt Ganapat High School, Feroke.  I joined in 8th G in 1976 June. In the first day Sri. Raja Rathanam master( known as Karuppayi Master-due to his colour- he is from nagercoil) came to our class asked our name details. Then he told I need a class leader. Due to Internal Emergency( By Smt Indira Gandhi) that year no election was declared for class leader. Then he asked me to stand,  “ you are Mr. Vasu’s son ?, Ok  You are the class leader”. My duties explained by him. Bring attendance register, chalk pieces, Atlas, Maps and other items needed by the teachers from office. While no teachers in class, maintain silence and write name of students violating this. Many teachers’ names forgotten, but a few names are still in memory. One Mrudula Teacher who was a Music teacher, English teacher  Basheer Master,  History teacher Abdurahman Master( Chappathi) Librarian Sami ( Ramanathan),  Mathematics teacher one Kottikkannan master( original name not remembering), Malayalam teacher Gopalakrishnan master etc.
In 1977 School Parliament election was declared, by the time I was actively attending Student Politics, Students Federation of India(SFI) nominated my name for class leader from 9 F. One of my friend Sri. Unnikrishnan also filed nomination. After election he could only able to score 6 votes out of 60 students. I used to lead different strikes and many other programs, due to that some teachers not liking me.  In 1978 again election came I was elected as class leader from 10 F , then SFI decided to field me as school leader and I was elected as School Leader.  Simultaneously I was SFI secretary, and then SFI Feroke Area secretary.
Kottikkanan master mathematics teacher one day declared that I will not pass the examination etc. Then I took this as challenge. I contacted Basheer master who was the secretary for Teachers union(KGTA) he took some special tuition for me in Mathematics and English. After SSLC examination the result was surprising for me. I got 72 marks in English, 66 marks in Maths out of 100, altogether 351/600. It was a good mark in that period. After result I met the same Maths teacher, he asked “are you passed” then I shown my result, he surprised.
Teachers have good role in molding the future generation. Recent period many teachers are lost the commitment to their job. Many teachers of Govt Schools are sending their children to Private English Medium schools where less qualified persons are teaching in order to show their status. Because of this many Govt Schools are at the verge of closure due to shortage of students. Where your child get an employment after education, if the public sector employment is reducing.
On the eve of Teachers Day I wish wishes to all Good Teachers.
